Marvel Fans Share The Sexist Abuse They Received For Liking Captain Marvel

As Brie Larson is set to reprise her role of Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in a new MCU movie, fans of the characters are revealing the sexist abuse they had to endure.

A sequel to the 2019 Captain Marvel, The Marvels will be directed by Nia DaCosta is set to open in theaters in late 2022. Alongside Larson, this new film will also feature WandaVision’s Teyonah Parris as adult Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, while Zawe Ashton will star as the film’s villain.

Marvel Fans Share Stories Of Dealing With Sexist Trolls For Simply Loving ‘Captain Marvel’

It seems like the film, penned by Megan McDonnell, will have a mostly female cast and creative team. The news has reignited the backlash first faced by Larson and her Captain Marvel two years ago when some in the Marvel fandom dismissed the character due to her gender and resulted in the actress feeling the pressure to wear the suit.

Mere days after Black Widow premiered, the idea of another female stand-alone MCU movie doesn’t sit well with some sexist fringes in the wider fandom. This prompted some fans to take to Twitter to share stories about being Captain Marvel fans and dealing with sexist trolls.

“Every time I see Captain Marvel (or Black Widow or WandaVision trending), I'm reminded how many comic book fans are misogynistic, insecure man-children who somehow haven't learned a thing from the diversity of the art form's characters or the expansive vision of its creators,” one fan tweeted.

"What’s it like being a Captain Marvel fan? What’s it like to simply try and like a singular character? Why, I’m so glad you asked! Because it’s dealing with absolute bullshit like this every. single. day since 2012… The absolute f***ing insecurities I swear to god…” another fan said, including screenshots of comments they have received from others in the fandom.

people really have the audacity to call black widow or captain marvel the most boring mcu film when this exists,” a fan wrote, sharing a poster of The Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton.

Fans Make Valid Points On The Criticism Against 'Captain Marvel'

“Hot take: Captain Marvel was not that bad. It was literally the exact same as every single marvel movie ever and the fact people went harder on it then any other MCU movie was sexist in itself,” one fan wrote.

“when will men realize that they are not the target audience for captain marvel and black widow,” another one asked.

The Marvels opens in theaters on November 11, 2022
